Fire Works display Monday at Perry Municipal Lake
Lions to serve free watermelon
Each year, the City of Perry has a fireworks display at the Perry Municipal Lake, southwest of the city.
This is a long-time tradition for Perry residents and others in the area.
A fireworks display, under the direction of Gary May and Tom Davis, will begin after dark Monday. The fireworks are funded through donations provided by merchants, businesses and individuals of Perry.
Police Chief Brian Thomas asked that those observing the Fourth of July on Monday at Perry Municipal Lake have a good time, but exercise safety, be aware of people around you and observe all posted signs on the lake property area.
“This is a great family time as we celebrate America’s birthday, but it can also be one that can be dangerous,” Chief Thomas said. “We have set guidelines to help ensure the safety of those participating in the City of Perry’s celebration.”
City Manager Mary Rupp said, “I encourage everyone to clean up their own areas before leaving for the evening. There will be extra dumpsters placed in strategic areas for your convenience.”
She said it takes city workers many hours to clean up after this annual event and if everyone helps by cleaning up after themselves, it could save the city money and many hours of man power.
The Perry Noon Lions will serve watermelon at the Lions Club pavilion beginning at 6 p.m. in the lake park.
The watermelon is free. Connelly Wade is the newly installed president of the Lions Club and Robert Filtz is chairman of this community service project, one that has been ongoing for many years.
Perry Police officers will be on patrol in the area and firefighters, with a truck, will be on standby.
Personal fireworks will be allowed in the spillway area south of the RV parking area. Fireworks will be allowed in designated areas before the fireworks display and after the display. However, no fireworks will be allowed during the display.
Please observe the “No Fireworks Allowed” signs. These will be placed at the following areas:
• the intersections of Gunsmokc, Frontier and Harvest roads with County road 80 (the dam road)
• in the south area of the dam (just south of the RV parking area and at
Harvest Road)
• in the viewing area south of the dam
• in the fireworks parking area located north of the spillway.
There are other guidelines to be followed also, and signs will be posted. This includes no parking on either side of the dam. Parking will be allowed in the RV parking area, but no fireworks will be allowed.
A fire truck and ambulance will be at the site. Parking will also be allowed south of the dam and spillway area, but no fireworks in this area.
The areas of the island, boat ramp areas 1-5 and campsite areas 6-9 will be cordoned off and the road closed.
The street department will be making and placing the signs for the designated locations.
After the fireworks display, all vehicle in the RV area will be routed north.
No fireworks are allowed to be discharged on any property within the city limits.
The public fireworks display is made possible by donations from businesses, merchants and individuals. Donations are welcome.
